The generator problem for von Neumann algebras

From OpenAI Aftermath

The generator problem for von Neumann algebras asks whether every von Neumann algebra with separable predual is generated, as a von Neumann algebra, by a single operator, equivalently by two self-adjoint operators. After the reduction of the general case to type II1 factors, the question remained open for those factors. A manuscript dated 23 September 2026 in OpenAI's public mathematics collection (github.com/openai/math) claims that every type II1 factor with separable predual is singly generated, together with a relative generation theorem for irreducible inclusions. The collection includes a Lean formalization of both statements. This page summarizes the published claim and lists publicly available follow-up work. Statements are the respective authors' claims; the publication of a paper, code or a formal proof is not presented here as independent verification.

Background

  • As recounted in the introduction of the manuscript:
    • The type I, hyperfinite and properly infinite cases were established by Pearcy, by Suzuki and Saitô, and by Wogen, and Willig's direct-integral theorem reduces the general question to type II1 factors.
    • In the finite case, Behncke treated tensor products of two II1 factors, Popa factors with Cartan subalgebras, Ge and Popa factors with property Γ, and Ge and Shen certain arithmetic group examples; Shen's generator invariant unified these classes, and Dykema, Sinclair, Smith and White established its amplification formula. Sherman showed that finite generation of every countably generated II1 factor would suffice, Gao, Kunnawalkam Elayavalli, Patchell and Tan proved single generation under a sequential-commutation condition in an ultrapower, and Popa studied stable single generation. Hayes constructed a continuous family of II1 factors admitting no finite family of continuous generating sections.

The original result

  • Claim. Theorem 1.2 of Relative generation and the generator problem for finite factors states that every type II1 factor with separable predual is generated by two self-adjoint elements, equivalently by a single operator; with Willig's reduction, the manuscript states that this gives single generation of every von Neumann algebra with separable predual. Theorem 1.1 states that for an irreducible inclusion P ⊂ M of type II1 factors, with M of separable predual, the unitaries u with M generated by P and u form a dense Gδ subset of the unitary group of M in the trace 2-norm topology. The manuscript also derives that the generator invariants vanish for every such factor and that Voiculescu's microstates free entropy dimensions can change under replacement of a finite generating tuple.
  • Method, as described: the argument combines Popa's free-independence construction in tracial ultraproducts with a perturbation whose effect accumulates along a long word: a perturbation of order α/√ℓ of a unitary, coordinated across its ℓ occurrences in a word with coefficients from P, changes the correlation of the word with a test vector by an amount proportional to α, with an estimate uniform in ℓ.
  • Sources. The manuscript Relative generation and the generator problem for finite factors at commit 1581d4c.
  • Formalization, as described by the repository. The scope note states that the formalization answers the generator problem affirmatively for type II1 factors with separable predual, without a separability assumption on the representing Hilbert space or on the operator-norm topology, and that it also proves the relative generation result, including the normalized faithful normal trace in the assertion. The Comparator statements are FactorGeneration.lean and RelativeGeneration.lean.

2026-10-08 MathVet (GitHub; review of openai/math, tables at repository commit c76f1e4, 14 October 2026) Review (fidelity of the formal statements) Rates this family "full": both claims are stated, single generation of II1 factors with separable predual and the dense Gδ of relative generators for irreducible inclusions. Among the definitions to check it lists the hand-written von Neumann algebra notions (the II1 factor predicate, separable predual, generated von Neumann algebra and the trace topology), which it describes as standard formulations. It records sandboxed Comparator passes for both challenges. MathVet states that it does not claim any theorem false and reports what was machine-checked as stated.
2026-10-09 B. Bouwen, J. Castillejos, J. Curda, The generator problem for C*-algebras with comparison, arXiv:2610.13792v1 Remark (citation) Proves that certain classes of unital, simple, separable C*-algebras with comparison are singly generated, including tracially AF algebras and monotracial crossed products of actions on the Cantor space, and that simple separable tracially AF algebras have generator rank one. Its introduction states that a complete solution of the II1 factor case "by use of LLMs was announced and made public" in the OpenAI manuscript, so that the generator problem for von Neumann algebras is solved in the positive. arXiv preprint, version 1 of 9 October 2026.
2026-10-10 cert-machine, openai/math lane K: FactorGeneration and RelativeGeneration Verification (two kernels) Records that Lean's default kernel and the nanoda kernel accept the solutions of both challenges, in 2,851 s and 3,323 s. The project reports two-kernel certification of 398 of 416 challenges of the collection. Repository.

Niu, On the generators of separable unital C*-algebras, arXiv:2610.17411v1 Use Takes the single-generation theorem of the manuscript (cited as its Theorem 1.2) as its external input and proves, for a separable unital C*-algebra whose extreme tracial boundary is nonempty, compact and zero-dimensional, that strict comparison gives two generators, that real rank zero with strict comparison of projections gives single generation with a norm-dense Gδ of single generators, and that a further condition on a unitary gives single generation. It deduces that the reduced group C*-algebra of the free group Fn is singly generated for every n from 2 to ∞. 2026-10-15 G. A. Elliott, C. G. Li, Z. Niu, Single generation of transformation group algebras, arXiv:2610.21037v1 Remark (citation) Proves that C(X) ⋊ Γ is singly generated whenever Γ is a finitely generated discrete amenable group acting freely and minimally on a compact metrizable space with the uniform Rokhlin property and Cuntz comparison of open sets; in particular every free minimal Zd-crossed product with metrizable underlying space is singly generated. Its introduction recalls Kadison's question and states that "OpenAI resolves the remaining case".
