New page

The '''Toms–Winter conjecture''' predicts that three regularity properties coincide for separable, simple, nuclear, non-elementary C*-algebras: finite nuclear dimension, tensorial absorption of the Jiang–Su algebra ''𝒵'', and strict comparison of positive elements by traces. The implication from strict comparison to ''𝒵''-stability had remained open. Four manuscripts in OpenAI's public mathematics collection ([https://github.com/openai/math github.com/openai/math]) make claims in this area, among them that implication. In October 2026, two arXiv preprints by other authors, together, also claim to complete the proof of the conjecture. This page summarizes the published claims and lists publicly available follow-up work.

== Background ==
* As recounted in the introduction of the manuscript ''Cuntz comparison and Jiang–Su absorption'':
** Rørdam proved that ''𝒵''-absorption implies the comparison property in the simple exact unital setting.
** Winter's absorption theorem, with its converse by Castillejos, Evington, Tikuisis, White and Winter, gives the equivalence of finite nuclear dimension and ''𝒵''-stability in the simple separable unital nuclear non-elementary setting.
** The remaining direction, strict comparison ⇒ ''𝒵''-stability, is listed as Conjecture 5 and Problem XVIII in Schafhauser, Tikuisis and White, ''Nuclear C*-algebras: 99 problems'' ([https://arxiv.org/abs/2506.10902v2 arXiv:2506.10902v2]).
** Partial results:
*** Matui and Sato, for finitely many extremal traces;
*** Sato, Kirchberg–Rørdam and Toms–White–Winter, for compact extreme boundaries of finite covering dimension;
*** Castillejos, Evington, Tikuisis and White: for simple separable unital nuclear algebras with traces, strict comparison together with uniform property Γ is equivalent to ''𝒵''-stability.

== The original results ==
* '''Strict comparison implies ''𝒵''-stability (23 September 2026).''' The manuscript ''Cuntz comparison and Jiang–Su absorption'', Theorem: a separable simple nuclear non-elementary C*-algebra with strict comparison (in an extended-functional sense defined there) satisfies ''A'' ≅ ''A'' ⊗min ''𝒵''.
** The manuscript states that this resolves the corresponding implication of the Toms–Winter problem, including nonunital algebras and unbounded traces.
** More generally, it claims that every separable nuclear C*-algebra whose Cuntz semigroup is almost unperforated and fully almost divisible absorbs ''𝒵''.
* '''Uniform property Γ (23 September 2026).''' The manuscript ''Tracial projection methods and uniform property Γ'' makes three claims.
** For simple separable unital infinite-dimensional nuclear stably finite algebras with traces, real rank zero of the uniform tracial ultrapower of the uniform tracial completion implies uniform property Γ. The manuscript presents this as a positive answer to Problem XXI of Schafhauser, Tikuisis and White.
** Independently, strict comparison implies ''𝒵''-absorption in the unital case.
** It also treats a class of stably projectionless algebras.
* '''Nuclear dimension (23 September 2026).''' The manuscript ''Nuclear dimension and Jiang–Su stability without elementary subquotients'' claims two results:
** for separable nuclear C*-algebras with no nonzero elementary ideal subquotients, finite nuclear dimension is equivalent to ''𝒵''-stability;
** dimnuc(''A'' ⊗ ''𝒵'') ≤ 1 for every separable nuclear ''A''.
** The collection describes this as Robert and Tikuisis's Conjecture (C1).
* '''Equivariant ''𝒵''-stability (5 October 2026).''' The manuscript ''Equivariant Jiang–Su stability for amenable actions in the unital stably finite case'' claims a result for every action of a countable discrete amenable group on a simple separable unital infinite-dimensional nuclear stably finite ''𝒵''-stable C*-algebra: the action absorbs the trivial action on ''𝒵'' up to cocycle conjugacy. It presents this as the unital, stably finite case of Szabó's Conjecture A.
* '''Sources.''' Commit <code>1581d4c</code> of the openai/math repository:
* '''Formalization, as described by the repository.'''
** The scope note [https://github.com/openai/math/blob/1581d4cbdd69a0faf34b2089614fe2a814316a6a/lean/docs/291.md lean/docs/291.md] links the uniform-property-Γ manuscript. Its formalized result is that real rank zero of the uniform tracial ultrapower implies uniform property Γ. It adds that "the linked comparison results also prove Jiang–Su absorption and uniform property Γ" for simple separable unital infinite-dimensional nuclear algebras with strict comparison, and for the stated stably projectionless algebras.
** The only Comparator challenge, [https://github.com/openai/math/blob/1581d4cbdd69a0faf34b2089614fe2a814316a6a/lean/ComparatorChallenges/UniformGamma.lean UniformGamma.lean], states the real-rank-zero implication.
** The repository's Lean library also contains a theorem <code>unital_main</code> in [https://github.com/openai/math/blob/1581d4cbdd69a0faf34b2089614fe2a814316a6a/lean/OAI/Analysis/JiangSu/Main.lean lean/OAI/Analysis/JiangSu/Main.lean]. It states that a unital separable simple infinite-dimensional nuclear C*-algebra with strict comparison is isomorphic to its spatial tensor product with the library's Jiang–Su algebra, and has uniform property Γ when it has traces. This theorem is not among the Comparator challenges.
